The Biggest Question Since 'Art Vs Design' - 'Album or Artist'

As last week this is blog deux. See below for this weeks main blog.

Anyway, in feedback groups today with Steve the question was posed, 'Album or Arist' which is more important. 2 of us said album, 2 of us said artist. I have since asked 2 more people and one said artist one said album.

So I now put the question out to fellow HND/HNCers. Which is more important on a album. The name of the album, or the name of the artist?

Answers on a postcard please (or just comment with 'Album' or 'Artist')

Results in next weeks blog.

Artist - So you know who it is before you look at it.

The majority of the albums in my 'top 100 albums' book is in favour of the artist and sometimes equally.

On very rare occasions is the title bigger than the artiste. Which explains why John Cougar Mellancamp is not around anymore.

And who is Lola?

Cheers for that Dean. I think that has confirmed things. However it would still be good to get everyones views.

I was sort of leaning towards the artist been bigger after feedback meetings when Steve (the client) said he thinks the artist should be bigger, just thought i'd ask.

Any although I would love to say my blog is seen around the world and is in the google top 10, Lola is actually just a friend I asked the same question to.

I had been thinking of the same question myself because I didn't put much thought in what should be given more emphasis when I was designing in my sketchbook, without really thinking I gave the title of the CD the most emphasis but after looking at many CD's and the comments on here it looks lke the artist should be the largest.

I'd say artist - but it depends on the artist's name. If it is like mine, and is 4 words long, that can limit what you can do design wise. They may have to be the same size, but the order in which they appear may be important. I think I may change my design to show the artist at the top, rather than the name of the album.

In a commercial situation, it would largely depend on the management/artist themselves. Do they want more emphasis to their name or the album? It's their choice.

But for me, I'd say both need equal emphasis. That way you'll see the artist's name and the CD straight away.

I think there's a third part to it as well though, should the album art itself have more emphasis than both of them? After all, you see new album art from an artist you know and it's almost instantly recognised as a new album.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way, the more traditional way is to have the artist first. But considering this music is far from traditional I decided to show the title to appear more dominant.

I also looked at previous artworks of "Virtual Vices" releases(there are 5 in total) and although the artist name comes first the title is much bigger!
